JORVIK Viking Centre, York
At JORVIK Viking Centre you are standing on the site of one of the most famous and astounding discoveries of modern archaeology. Thirty years ago archaeologists revealed the houses, workshops and backyards of the Viking-Age city of Jorvik, as it stood 1,000 years ago along with over 40,000 artefacts!
JORVIK Viking Centre was then built on this very site where the excavations had taken place, creating a groundbreaking visitor experience that changed the face of museums. The determination to recreate a Viking city as authentically as possible from the layout of the houses, the working craftsmen, the language of the gossiping neighbours, to the smells of cooking and the cesspit meant it has now been visited by 16 million people during its 26 years of opening.
Now YOU can take hold of the past and explore the excavations which first unearthed the Viking-age city in our brand new exhibitions. The remains of 1,000-year-old houses are revealed beneath your feet, objects taken from the excavations are explored, and Viking-age timbers are brought before your eyes.
