Article published on 20 July 2010
There's no better way to celebrate the summer than with a festival and Eureka! The National Children's Museum has just the ticket: PlayFest, a summer festival of play happening every day from Saturday 17 July to Sunday 5 September.
For seven weeks Eureka! will be full of fun-filled indoor and outdoor activities, changing each fortnight when a new PlayFest theme is unveiled. From ‘School's Out', to ‘Seaside', ‘All the fun of the fair' and ‘Carnival', each theme brings changing activities to enjoy, and with the Eureka! Annual Pass, visitors can enjoy each one for the price of a single day's admission. PlayFest activities will change from day to day, and some are available at an additional charge.
PlayFest begins with ‘School's Out', on from 17 - 30 July, when Eureka! celebrates the end-of-term. All week look out for games like egg and spoon or space hopper races, giant outdoor games, and musical adventures inside where aspiring stars can show off their dance moves and singing skills.
From 31 July - 13 August it's time to bring your buckets for a day at the PlayFest ‘Seaside'. Eureka! puts on a classic summer experience with boogieing on the beach and limbo competitions throughout the week. Donkey rides, with donkeys just off the Blackpool Beach, will be available Mondays and Thursdays while visitor can take part in Pirate fun on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays all for minimal additional charge.
On Wednesday 4 August Eureka! will celebrate National Play Day with exciting outdoor activities including cardboard city building and spaghetti painting. Inside Eureka! enjoy ‘Clowning Around' free play with costumes, props and do-it-yourself face painting. All activities are free on Play Day.
‘All the fun of the Fair' arrives at Eureka! from 14 - 27 August, coinciding with exciting events during the Halifax Festival. Fun festival activities on throughout include giant tug-of-war, welly wanging and scarecrow making. Other exciting Halifax Festival events will include giant dance mats, theatrical storytelling, and a festival finale of ‘E.T.' and ‘Dirty Dancing' as drive-in movies finishing with a firework spectacular.
PlayFest concludes by presenting ‘Carnival', from 27 August to 5 September. Join in a vibrant sun and samba-themed end to summer, when favourite activities from the whole of PlayFest reappear, and chances to take part in a Eureka! carnival abound. During the week visitors might make a headdress, costume or instrument and take part in a Carnival parade around Eureka!, or experience live music and dancing as another Festival season winds down.
Visit the Eureka! website on http://www.eureka.org.uk for more information about PlayFest, including schedules of activities and events to plan your visit. To enjoy PlayFest to the fullest, please remember to wear play clothes.
