JORVIK Viking Festival

11th - 19th February, 2012

1000 years ago when York was under Viking rule, great celebrations took place in February called ‘Jolablot' to herald the coming of spring and the survival of winter hardships. These celebrations were long forgotten until the 1980s when York Archaeological Trust, through their own funding, revived Jolablot, creating the largest Viking Festival in Europe. Now in its 27th year, the Festival is bigger and better than ever, attracting over 40,000 visitors to the City of York, Viking re-enactors from across Europe and media interest from around the world, with over 80 events for all ages including:

• A Viking wedding in York Minster
• Black tie dinner event with key-note speaker, Dr Alice Roberts
• Viking battle finale with fire drawings, a 60ft boat burning and spectacular firework display.
• Strongman competition with an Olympic theme
• The Annual best beard competition
